Understanding breadcrumbs
A small feature with three important jobs
Breadcrumbs improve navigation, reinforce the structure of a website and create useful internal links between related pages.
01
What are breadcrumbs?
Breadcrumbs are a short trail of links showing a page’s position within a website. They usually begin with the homepage and move through the relevant category or service area before reaching the current page.
02
Why do they matter?
They help people understand a website without repeatedly opening the menu. They also reinforce the relationship between pages, supporting a clearer internal structure for users and search engines.
03
How should they be used?
Keep the trail short, descriptive and consistent with the real structure of the website. Every parent level should lead somewhere genuinely useful rather than adding another unnecessary step.
Small feature, useful job
How breadcrumbs help a website
Breadcrumbs are not a magic ranking switch. Their value comes from making the website easier to navigate and its hierarchy easier to understand.
Clear orientation
Visitors can see where they are and move back to a broader section in one click.
Useful internal links
Each trail creates logical links to important parent pages without forcing them into the main copy.
Stronger hierarchy
Consistent trails reinforce how services, categories, guides and individual pages fit together.
Search presentation
Valid breadcrumb structured data can help Google understand and present the page’s position in search results.
A breadcrumb should mirror the real structure

Short labels, a logical journey and a useful parent page at every level.
Confusing
Generic labels and unnecessary levels tell neither the user nor Google what the page is about.
The three common types
Hierarchy-based
Shows where the page sits within the website. This is normally the best choice for service websites, ecommerce categories and information hubs.
Attribute-based
Often used in ecommerce to reflect selected properties such as colour, size or brand. This needs careful handling when filters create many URLs.
History-based
Reflects the route a visitor took through the site. It can change between visits and usually provides less structural value than a fixed hierarchy.
Implementation checklist
Build breadcrumbs properly
The trail should help a person first. Structured data should describe the same visible hierarchy, not create a different one purely for search engines.
Place the trail near the top of the main content.
Use short, descriptive labels that match the destination pages.
Link each parent level, but do not force a link onto the current page.
Keep it readable and easy to tap on a mobile screen.
Add valid BreadcrumbList structured data and test it.
WordPress websites
Check the theme before adding another trail
Many WordPress themes and SEO plugins can generate breadcrumbs. Rank Math and Yoast both provide options, but the exact setup depends on the theme and page builder.
Avoid duplicates
Do not activate breadcrumbs in a plugin and then add a separate breadcrumb widget without checking the output. Two visible trails or two conflicting schema blocks create noise rather than clarity.
Common breadcrumb mistakes
Breadcrumbs should represent the useful site hierarchy, not blindly copy every folder in a URL.
Keep the path concise. A visitor should not have to decode six vague categories.
Use sensible wrapping rather than removing a helpful navigation feature.
Internal links, canonicals, sitemaps and breadcrumb structure should point towards the same preferred pages.
Structured data should support a real, visible breadcrumb trail rather than replace it.
Breadcrumbs support clarity and internal structure. They do not override weak content or poor authority.
